Bitcoin ETF in a Roth IRA: $7,500 Limit, Fees From 0.14%
Spot Bitcoin ETFs trade like any listed fund, so they fit in a Roth IRA at most large brokers. Here is what the IRS limits allow this year, the wash-sale trap when you rebuy in an IRA, and why fees matter more inside an account you hold for decades.
Can you hold a Bitcoin ETF in a Roth IRA?
Yes. The twelve US spot Bitcoin ETFs, from BlackRock's IBIT to Grayscale's Mini Trust BTC, are exchange-listed securities, so a brokerage Roth IRA can buy them the same way it buys a stock index fund. The question since 2024 has been which brokers allow it, not whether the tax code does. The last large holdout changed course in December 2025: Vanguard, which refused to offer spot Bitcoin ETFs when they launched in January 2024, began letting clients trade ETFs and mutual funds that mainly hold bitcoin, ether, XRP and Solana, according to Bloomberg and The Block. Vanguard said it would not launch its own crypto funds or advise clients on them.
Inside a Roth, gains on the fund are not taxed while you hold it, and qualified withdrawals are tax-free, which for most people means the account is at least five years old and you are 59Β½ or older (IRS Publication 590-B). Selling one Bitcoin ETF to buy another inside the account triggers no tax at all, which is why the IRA is the cleanest place to switch out of an expensive fund. Our GBTC vs BTC guide walks through that switch; the wider rules for taxable accounts are in the crypto ETF tax guide.
How much can I put in a Roth IRA this year?
The IRS raised the IRA contribution limit to $7,500 for 2026, up from $7,000, with a $1,100 catch-up for savers 50 and older, so $8,600 in total. The limit is shared across all your traditional and Roth IRAs. Who can contribute directly to a Roth depends on income:
| Filing status | Roth phase-out range |
|---|---|
| Single or head of household | $153,000 to $168,000 |
| Married filing jointly | $242,000 to $252,000 |
| Married filing separately | $0 to $10,000 |
Above the top of the range, a direct Roth contribution is not allowed. These figures come from the IRS release for Notice 2025-67.
Does the wash-sale rule apply to an IRA?
It does, and in the worst way. If you sell a Bitcoin ETF at a loss in a taxable account and your IRA or Roth IRA buys substantially identical shares within 30 days before or after, the IRS disallows the loss, and the IRA's cost basis is not increased by it (Revenue Ruling 2008-5; Publication 550). In a taxable account a disallowed loss is normally added to the new shares' basis and recovered later; when the buyer is the IRA, that recovery never happens. After this year's drawdown, that matters: anyone harvesting a loss on IBIT or FBTC in a brokerage account should keep the Roth out of the same fund for 30 days on either side.
What is the cheapest Bitcoin ETF for an IRA?
Morgan Stanley's MSBT, at a 0.14% sponsor fee, followed by Grayscale's Mini Trust at 0.15%; IBIT and FBTC charge 0.25% and GBTC 1.50%, per the issuers. In a taxable account a fee is one cost among several. In a Roth you may hold for 20 years it becomes the main one, because there is no tax to manage and the fee comes out of the fund every day. On a single $7,500 contribution, with bitcoin's price assumed flat, the cumulative fee over 20 years works out to:
If bitcoin rises, every figure scales with it. The full twelve-fund table is in our Bitcoin ETF list.
What it means for investors
A Roth is built for holding, so the choice comes down to fee and liquidity rather than tax timing. Between the two names most retirement savers start with, Pre-Tick's IBIT vs BTC comparison prices the gap at $1.00 per $1,000 a year in the Mini Trust's favour, against IBIT's far deeper trading. For a buy-and-hold contribution made once a year, that depth matters less than it does to a trader.
What does matter on the day you buy is the open. Bitcoin trades through the night while these funds are shut, so a 9:30 a.m. ET order fills at a price that already carries the overnight move. Across the 60 sessions from July 27 to October 19, Pre-Tick's pre-market estimate landed a median 0.064% from IBIT's official open and 0.042% from BTC's, against roughly 1.0% for the prior-close price most people look at (accuracy). Checking the estimate before placing a market order is the cheapest way to avoid a surprise fill.
Leveraged and inverse funds such as BITU and SBIT reset daily and are not built for a decades-long account; Pre-Tick's leverage decay backtest shows how far a 2x fund drifts from 2x over 30 or 90 days. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I buy a Bitcoin ETF in my Roth IRA?
Yes, at brokers that list spot Bitcoin ETFs, which since December 2025 includes Vanguard. Gains inside the Roth are not taxed, and qualified withdrawals after age 59Β½ and five years are tax-free.
What is the cheapest Bitcoin ETF to hold in an IRA?
Morgan Stanley's MSBT at 0.14% a year, then Grayscale's Bitcoin Mini Trust (BTC) at 0.15%. IBIT and FBTC charge 0.25%; GBTC charges 1.50%.
Can a Roth IRA purchase trigger a wash sale?
Yes. Selling a Bitcoin ETF at a loss in a taxable account and buying the same fund in your IRA within 30 days disallows the loss, and the IRA's basis does not absorb it, per IRS Revenue Ruling 2008-5.
